Benmore Fernery

BENMORE FERNERY

Originally constructed in the 1870's, the historic fernery at Benmore is now fully restored.

Steeped in history and surrounded by dramatic scenery, Benmore Botanic Garden lies in a magnificent mountainside setting on the Cowal Peninsula.

After an 18 month restoration project the Victorian fernery re-opened on 8th September 2009. The restoration included complete replacement of the steel structure, glazing system, ventilation and glass. It is unique because of its scale (140m2) and is now a Grade B listed building of great architectural and botanical value. Built into a hillside, height ranges from single storey to three levels with a vaulted entrance, grotto and pool.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland has deemed it “extremely rare and unique in its design”.

Ian Lawrie, RBGE’s Head of Facilities Management said “Climate Controls Ltd were able to provide a solution that has been met with the admiration of all who have seen the completed structure.”

The environment within the fernery is controlled by the Climate Controls MS100 PowerStation. We also manufactured and installed the mechanical ventilation. The steelwork and glazed envelope was manufactured and installed by our partners at Forzon.
